memorial day weekend...

The weekend was lots of fun. Friday we left to go to the Apostle Islands for the weekend. Our adventure started in Brule, WI where we had arranged to rent some kayaks. We pulled into the place and the doors were locked, no one where there. WTF? We waited around for about an hour and still no one showed. Mind you, Mark had arranged to meet the guy between 6 and 7 to pick these up. After an hour Mark started walking around to local establishments to see if anyone knew the guy and if we could somehow get ahold of him. No luck, until he talked to a bartender who said that he had gone to Hayward for the night. Great. We left town without kayaks, which we were really bummed about because that was the whole reason we'd decided to go to the Apostle Islands. We got to our campsite where we met up with another couple, set up the tent, and grilled up some brats for dinner.

Saturday morning Mark called the guy again and finally got ahold of him. We arranged to meet him in the wonderful town of Herbster and pick up the kayaks. *Whew* crisis averted. We got to the town and shockingly the guy still wasn't there. There just so happened to be a fabulous little shop that has all of this great woodworking in it. AND one of the "suppliers" for the shop is a friend of my Great Aunt Evie's...Allyn Leppala. :) He has a lot of really cool stuff in there along with a couple other local people. Mark found a birthday present for his mom which was kind of cool. After we finally got everything loaded into the truck we went to put the kayaks in the water. I've never stripped so many times in the outdoors in all my life. Since there weren't any changing rooms I just changed my clothes while trying to be discreet in the parking lot. We kayaked to these awesome sea caves which in the summer are only accessible by water. They were gorgeous! The water was a little wavy so it was tough going at times, but it was definitely worth it for the view. I really want to go back in the winter, because you can walk out to the caves on the ice. I'll post some pictures when I get them from the guy that was with us. After we got off the water, we hiked the trail so we could see the caves from the top and then went back to the campsite. We had cudighi sandwiches (mine was sans bread of course) with baked beans for dinner. YUMMY!

Sunday morning we got up and dinked around before we tried to find a new place to put the boats in the water. After awhile, we finally found a spot and got all the gear on. We were only about a mile away from shore when we heard thunder. Uh oh...so we headed back toward shore. We took the boats out of the water just as it started to rain. That ended the outdoor activities for the day so we headed into Bayfield where we stopped for snacks and a drink at a local bar and then went for ice cream. By that time the rain had ended so we went back to our campsite where the guys went to get firewood, Marie took a nap, and I read a magazine and babysat the campfire. Sunday night we had grilled chicken and potatoes for dinner. Again YUMMY!

Monday we got up and it was foggy and misty so we had some hot chocolate and oatmeal, packed our stuff up, and took off. We stopped at Mark's aunts cabin on Lake Nebagamon to say hi and then headed back to Cloquet. After a shower (it had been 3 days I was well overdue) Mark and I went with his dad to check out their new house on Island Lake. He was meeting with a landscaper to discuss something that came up in the inspection so we got to see the house. It's really nice! After dinner I came home to my roomie! It's so nice to come home to someone. I unpacked and crashed around 10. I'm still feeling tired after a weekend full of fresh air, but it as definitely worth it! We had so much fun!!
