STUDENTS SKIP SCHOOL ON OPENING DAY: Firearm deer season opening day was a popular day for high school students to take off of school, even though it was a Thursday. Darryl Pierce, superintendent of the Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium and Keweenaw said of 472 students enrolled at the high school, 173 students observed opening day or were out of school due to illness - nearly 37 percent of the high school student body was out of school Thursday.

We had a similar situation in my school. You have to have 40% of your students in attendance to receive state funding for that day. Opening day one year, we didn't get that 40%, so we had to make the day up anyway. They usually give opening day off now, but they go back and forth with it. My brothers quite often missed school that day!
Love the season shot - makes me remember picking lead shot out of pheasant at the dinner table - so gross.
